Finding: No association between sucrose consumption and ADHD
Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the change in sugar consumption between 6 and 11 years of age and incidence of ADHD in the Pelotas 2004 Birth Cohort in Brazil.
A Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used to estimate sugar consumption and ADHD was assessed with the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) tool. Both tools were administered at 6 and 11 years. Incidence of ADHD was 4.6% in boys and 1.8% in girls.
Adjusted analyses showed no association between continually high sugar consumption between 6 and 11 years and incidence of ADHD, compared to low sugar consumption in boys or girls.
